National Feral Cat Day
Happy National Feral Cat Day!
October 16 is National Feral Cat Day. Take a few minutes today to help spread the word about Feral cats! Tell someone about what they are, why they are feral, what a colony is, about the pros and cons of having a colony nearby, and about population management! If you spread the word to one person today, that is one more person than yesterday who knew about Feral Cats.
Here is what Alley Cat Allies has to say about National Feral Cat Day:
October 16 - Ten Year Anniversary
National Feral Cat Day (NFCD) is your opportunity to help protect and improve the lives of cats around the county!
In 1990, most Americans didn’t know the best way to care for stray and feral cats. Thanks to Alley Cat Allies, today, improving their lives through Trap-Neuter-Return programs is widespread—and the movement continues to build. Hundreds of local groups work on behalf of stray and feral cats, while millions of Americans have reached into their hearts and their wallets to care for and feed them.

Product Review - Bergan Turbo Scratcher
I have a cat who doesn't like toys. He doesn't like treats and he doesn't like people. He was semi-feral when I brought him him. He is frequently ornery and usually doesn't want to be touched. He doesn't play ... that is ... he didn't until I bought a toy that was similar to the Bergan Turbo.
This has a ball in the outer rim and corrugated cardboard in the centre. The cardboard is replacable. I have to admit - this was the best thing I ever bought for my cat! Not only is it entertainment, it also provides an appropriate place for your cat to scratch.
The best thing about this toy? Both our cats enjoy playing with it and it wasn't super-crazy expensive to buy.

The Cat Lady
The kitten calls are flooding our lines. This year the calls to our Lost & Found line with people wanting to get rid of their kittens is up by 30%. We don't know if that's because we are building our shelter and have had more PR lately or if that is because we have lost control of the Spay/Neuter of our local strays. I agreed to take one litter at a time and since I have adopted out our one adult we had, I have space to take a litter.
I had the opportunity this week to go and catch a mom cat and her litter. She had made her home under a person's deck but that person doesn't like cats and her son is "dreadfully allergic" (yeah, we've all heard that before).
So I arrive at the lady's house after work. I'm tired. I've worked all day and now I'm going to try and catch a bunch of kittens who have been un-handled (except for her son who goes out daily and feeds them and plays with them but apparently is NOT allergic to the cats if they are outside!!). Great. I didn't tell her the nasty thoughts that went through my head when she told me this!
I get to her house and she's waiting at the door for me. She won't open the door. She talks through it, opening it only about an inch so her voice carries through. How Rude. As soon as I'm within hearing range, she calls out "Are you the cat lady?"
Great. Now I'm "The Cat Lady". Wonderful. Just what I dreamed of when I was little - to grow up and become "The Cat Lady". Yahoo. Can you hear the sarcasm dripping? I tell her that yes, I'm the one who is going to catch the cats. She nods, closes the door the rest of the way and turns around to go back into her kitchen.
So much for me using her bathroom ... and no, I didn't want a drink of water or anything - thanks. Dumbass.
I shake my head and set myself up on her deck in the shade. Momma cat is SO happy to see me, she's purring and ever so friendly. The kittens run away when they see me.
After about 30 minutes, I have caught all the kittens. I knock on the door and the lady comes back, opening the door an inch. I ask her if there are 5 kittens. She says no, there are 6. I ask her what colours, she says 3 brown and 3 orange. I tell her I can't find the 6th one. She calls her son who then tells her that there are 4 orange and 2 brown. Great.
I wait for another 10 minutes with Momma cat but I see no other kitten and hear no mewing. I doubt there is another kitten or if there was, I bet it's dead. So I load up the momma in my spare carrier.
I tell the lady I can't find the last one and she tells me she will call me if she sees it. Now that I've caught the kittens, she wants to know what I will do with them. I tell her that they will be handled until they are friendly, then adopted out. Suddenly, she knows all sorts of people who would want the kittens. (Go figure, eh?) I thank her and ask that she let these people know to call the Humane Society if they are interested. She is upset. Apparently she thought she could just have the kittens back and give them to her friends when they've been dewormed, vaccinated and "friendlied". Dumbass.
Now I've got 5 kittens and a momma cat in a crate. I had to put them in the barn because I currently have a dog who would kill them given the chance. My resident cats are both adults and have figured out that if they don't know the dog, don't go close. Not to mention that my husband is allergic to cats ... though we live with two permanents plus fosters. Pictures to follow shortly. I have none right now.

PSA ~ Help Me .... Take me to the Clinic
Roberta @ Silverwalk posted a comment and a link in one of my blog entries so, naturally I went and visited it (as I do with every link people send me). The link I went to was the blog for a newspaper called Southeast Missourian. When I went there, I found the video below and thought I really should post it. Crossposting helps get the information out there and in my opinion ... anything that will help should be done.
Some people I've met have troubles learning certain concepts but they have told me (and I strongly believe) that if you put that same information to a song, you will learn it FAR quicker with less pain. So ... here goes nothing! (I hope it works).
Enjoy.

Adopt-A-Pet website ... a new way of listing shelter dogs
I received an email from a representative of "Adopt-A-Pet.com" recently. I'm sure other bloggers received the same email. The rep requested that I publish a post about the website. After spending some time checking out the site, I agreed. (See below for more info) This will be similar to a Post Exchange.

New Barn Cat Has Arrived
Well everyone, I went through with it. I finally got the new barn cat that was supposed to have arrived over a month ago! She was supposed to be a semi-feral Maine Coon ... remember the guy sent me a picture and then turned around and said he sent it to the wrong person? (See this post)
I finally found out that the guy is actually some good sam. who traps cats in one colony out of Toronto. He sometimes works with Toronto Cat Rescue.
So yesterday, he brought the cat to my workplace to drop her off. I met him outside and was surprised (but not really) when I saw that the "Maine Coon" he had promised turned out to be a petite DSH tortoiseshell. Here is a picture of her that I took last night ...
She's not the cutest cat, but it won't really matter since she's going to be a barn cat. We have to introduce her to our barn slowly so that means she will spend the next two weeks in a crate out there, then another two weeks locked in a room out there before we can let her go to *hopefully* catch mice.
I didn't spend much time with her yesterday. I wanted to let her settle in, so all I did was set up the crate, put her in it and take this picture. After a few days I will see if I can pat her. The guy said that she's been living in a house for the last two months because she gave birth to kittens two days after he trapped her.
I'm amazed at the things this guy provided! He gave us the cat carrier she was in, the towels that were in/on the crate, a 9 kg bag of cat food and a 22 kg box of cat litter! I wonder why he would give us this much ... especially since he charged no fee - she was free. He paid for her vet visit for spay, vaccinations and Revolution.

DDF Crosspost - 200 Follower Contest
Well, I'm back from my trip. What an interesting place Cuba is. A little too hot in July for my liking, but we were there to participate in a destination wedding so what can you do, eh? I have a few pictures of some dogs I saw in my travels that I am going to share with you as soon as I have converted them from RAW to JPEG format. News Reel - Cat prices cut at shelter
Any time a shelter lowers the cost of adoption fees, there are arguments on both sides. Such is the case in response to this article: Cat prices cut at Fort Garry shelter. The gist of it is that the shelter is overwhelmed by cats (they have 490 at the time the article was written), so to increase adoptions, they have reduced the adoption fee to $25.
There are those who argue that if the person really wanted a cat, they would pay the full amount. That those who adopt at a lower rate either don't want the cat as much or can't afford a cat in the first place.
Then there are those who promote the reduced rates, claiming that it increases adoptions and reduces the need for euthanasia due to space restrictions.

New Barn Cat - Part 2
So you know how I said I was going to be picking up a new barn cat? Well, the cat still hasn't shown up. The "owner" (who I'm now thinking is more accurately named the "trapper") keeps telling me that he needs "another week". Well, we had settled on a pickup of this week (it's now been almost 5 weeks since I offered to take this cat) and I have yet to hear from the guy.
I told the guy that I was going to spay/vaccinate the cats and he told me not to worry about it because he would have that done. I told him I wanted vet records. No response.
Check out this email that he sent me on May 28th:
Hi Emily,
I want to let you know I mistakenly sent you the wrong email which contained information on socializing and a picture of a cat. I meant to send that to someone else. The socializing piece really isn't that critical for you since they will be barn cats. I I still hope to have them ready for you by the week of the 7th. My apologies!!
Jon
Then I get this one on the 7th of June ...
Hi Emily,
I was just wondering if we could possibly postpone the delivery of the 2 cats for another week or two? We've had some unexpected rescues come up and this would just buy me a little more time. The cats should be okay until then.
Thanks
Jonathan
Ok, so first off, I agreed to take one cat, not two. Not sure how it ended up that I was taking two but it doesn't really matter much. Two is fine. Then on June 8th, I asked what rescue he works with. Who does he volunteer with?? No answer. I have received NO emails since.
Don't you think that if he worked with a LEGIT rescue that he would accept the offer of money to help pay for vet bills??
Also, don't you think that if he's "had some unexpected rescues" come in that he would be more than happy to off-load some cats?
So, I have decided he is a creeper. I won't be taking any cats from him unless he emails me the name of the rescue so I can check it out (and check him out too!). Let me tell you, I sure am glad I didn't give the guy my phone number!

Black Kitten Update!
Do you remember the feral black kitten I took in over the winter?? It took us 2 weeks before we could touch her. She hissed and growled a lot. We were told that she probably had FIP because she was bloated. I blogged a bit about her and we weren't sure if we would have to put her to sleep or not. I did not update about her earlier sincen we were in a holding pattern and I didn't have anything factual to offer. The constant "will we euthanize or not" was getting a bit depressing to write about so I stopped updating.
I am super happy to let you know that we did not euthanize her. We kept her around, did blood work like crazy but could not find any other evidence of FIP. The vet told us she would probably die in a few weeks and she never did. We waited and waited but each time we did the FIP blood work, it came back negative.
After a few months having her quarantined and having blood work come back "all clean" we decided that there must be a mis-diagnosis going on. We took her in for vaccinations and then in for spay (ovario-hysterectomy). They still could not find anything wrong with her.
So, rather than adopting her out (since she's not really "healthy"), we kept her. We integrated her with our perma-cat and they get along well together. She has been living outside of the bathroom for a month or more now and things seem to be going ok. It will take a few months before she is totally settled in - she's still skittish and frightened of a lot (people, sounds, dogs that aren't ours).
She is also still super heavy and bloated. I have discussed this with the vet and they suggest that perhaps she does not do well on kibble - that it might be causing the bloat. Who knows, perhaps she will be the first cat we have on RAW! Anyone have any experience feeding cats RAW?
I will have some updated pictures of her soon. We named her Princess Jasmine (she came with the name Jazz but she's a snob so we thought we would add a bit to the name! It suits her more this way).

New Barn Cat
So I'm getting a new barn cat in a few weeks' time (we've agreed on the week of June 8th). Here's a picture ...
Someone posted her on Craigslist for free. I figured that since I have space, I'd take her. I asked the person to have her spayed and vaccinated and asked that I be given copies of all the paperwork for proof so I can take this info to my vet. He agreed. He is paying for it all (nice guy, eh?). I had offered to pay but he was insistent. Why can't they all be like that??
Anyway, he thinks she's a Maine Coon mix of some sort and he tells me that she's semi-feral. Apparently she's not his cat but he's taking care of the necessities anyway since she showed up on his "doorstep". Not sure if she really semi-feral or if she's just frightened. I'll post more about her after I pick her up.

Featured Rescue - Eva the Calico has a broken leg!
Today's Featured Rescue is Eva. See below for more info about Eva ... courtesy of http://www.allistonhumane.com/
Alliston & District Humane Society faces huge challenges when it comes to covering the medical expenses of animals in their care. Even the cost of spaying and vaccinating a healthy animal far exceeds the adoption fee we collect for each animal.
A case in point is little Eva, a friendly, healthy one year old calico female cat who was being fed as part of a stray and feral colony of cats by a resident of Tosorontio township. She was brought into our care on a cold weekend in February 2010. She had a broken leg, which probably occurred when she sought shelter under the hood of a warm vehicle and caught her leg in a fan belt. Since ADHS is a no-kill humane society, we authorized a critical surgery to correct a spiral fracture of her left femur. She will need lots of time and tender care to recover; by the time she is ready for adoption, her medical bills will exceed one thousand dollars!
If you'd like to help us with the cost of Eva's surgery and rehabilitation, donations can be made by clicking on the "Chip In" menu button. All donations will be given to Alliston & District Humane Society and will be directed towards veterinary bills.

Featured Rescue - Magan
So you know how I'm always going on about how rescues need to get GOOD pictures to post with their animals that are up for adoption?? Well here's one picture that stood out to me when I was flipping through Petfinder. This is an AWESOME picture!!
Magan is almost 4 years old and was the only survivor of her litter. She is being cared for in a foster home with CAT-A-MATCH RESCUE in Ottawa, ON.

Black Cat Friday - Peabody-DazzleU
I love the name they chose for this guy! Peabody-DazzleU. Good grief - some of the people who pick animal names are SO creative! At 12 weeks old, he's still a baby. He's being cared for by a foster home affiliated with Shelter to Home, Inc. (MI)
Today is Black Cat Friday. Did you remember? Do you have a blog? Why not feature a cat/dog in need of a home today? Any publicity is helpful - who knows, maybe people will begin to understand the staggering numbers that are out there ... probably not, but we can hope!

Featured Rescue - Libby and Hobbes
I love Dilutes. Can't help it and I don't know why. Today's Featured Rescue is Libby (left) - a Dilute Calico from Rochester NY and her kitten, Hobbes (right). Here's their story:
Libby had her kittens in the back of someone's car late last summer. Imagine their surprise when they opened the car door and a very scared Libby scooted out! Three tiny kittens lay on the backseat and the car's owner didn't know what to do. We bottlefed them overnight until we were finally able to catch Libby in a humane trap and reunite her with her babies. One of Libby's kittens is still at the shelter too (see "Hobbes"). Libby is around 3 years old. Hobbes is 1.5 years.
Libby and Hobbes are both being cared for by Four-Legged Friends Animal Adoptions, Inc.

Featured Rescue - Black Cat Friday
Keeping with the trend for Black Cat Friday, I have found this lovely looking guy with a terrible picture. Check it out ... it looks like someone put his tail in an electrical socket. To add insult to injury, they have named to poor guy "Twitch". Ugh.
Twitch is Declawed in the front, 3 years old and neutered. He is currently residing in the Humane Society of Northwestern Pennsylvania. I hope someone gives him a chance. He might be a great addition to a home.
It's too bad they don't have some nice volunteer come in to take good pictures of the animals. Sometimes it really helps to have people do that.

Featured Rescue Updates - February
It's been a long time since I did a Featured Rescue update on this blog so I thought I would do one now! The following cats I listed on my blog have been adopted (or if their listing has been removed ... hopefully they have not been euthanized!):
Featured Rescue - Raine (young - adopted)
Featured Rescue - Gus (adult - listing removed)
Featured Rescue - Halo (adult approaching senior - listing removed)
Featured Rescue - Rosie (adolescent - listing removed)
Featured Rescue - Mickey (kitten - listing removed)
Featured Rescue - Gypsy (adult - listing removed)
Featured Rescue - Zombie (adult - listing removed)
Featured Rescue - Stormy (senior - listing removed)
Featured Rescue - Squeakers (senior - listing removed)
Featured Rescue - Sasha (senior - listing removed)
Featured Rescue - Peaches (young - listing removed)
Congratulations to those cats! (I hope) The following cats are still looking for new homes:
Featured Rescue - Hex (kitten)
Featured Rescue - Maude (adolescent)
Featured Rescue - Deuce ("young")
Featured Rescue - Teena Marie (senior)
Featured Rescue - Maggie (senior)
Featured Rescue - Cinders (senior)
Featured Rescue - Cookie (senior)
Featured Rescue - Sky and Myrt (adult)
Featured Rescue - Oliver (adult)
Featured Rescue - Jack Black (adult)
Remember, SPAY AND NEUTER your cats! There are so many out there looking for homes many are euthanized every day. There are just too many out there. The numbers are STAGGERING. Sometimes the rescues and shelters have to make that decision for those animals that are more difficult to adopt. When a listing has been removed I always hope that the animal has been adopted and not euthanized.

Foster Update
To read the previous posts about this kitten, click here and here and here.
We had bloodwork run this week for the kitten. It was a FIPV (DNA) test. The test came back negative on Friday morning. The lab says that in order to be able to diagnose a negative for FIP, we must do the same bloodwork for 4 weeks in a row and have a negative each time. Her next appointment for bloodwork is Friday.
If she is presumtively diagnosed negative, the question remains ... why does she have a distended abdomen? What is wrong with her?
The saga continues ... I will try to remember to get a new picture of her for the next update.

Featured Rescue - Black Cat Friday
On my Dogs Deserve Freedom blog, I have created a Black Dog Monday post where I will feature a black dog every Monday. I am now making a similar post here but it will be called Black Cat Friday.
Black animals are notoriously difficult to adopt out of rescue and shelter situations. Because of this, I have decided to dedicate one day per week to Black Cats looking for homes. Nominations are welcome; if you know of a shelter that has many black cats needing homes let me know and I will post some of them.
Today's Black Cat Featured Rescue is Jack Black. His ad on Petfinder states that Jack was one of the 18 cruelty cases that was brought to us during the holidays. You can probably see from the photo that he has a gorgeous long mane of fur - which is why his previous owners were using him for breeding - NOT cool! Jack is a beautiful cat who is in need of a home. He is currently located at Etobicoke Humane Society. If you can offer him a home, please contact them at 416.249.6100.

Foster Update - Bloodwork Scheduled
Hi everyone. Thought I'd post a quick update for those who are interested ...
Our little black kitten is doing well. She is now very friendly and full of spirit. Since she is doing so well (we were expecting her to go downhill, not up!) we are going to run some bloodwork later this week. We had expected to be offering Palliative Care to a sick and dying cat but she has been slowly getting better.
The antibiotics she was receiving cleared up her snotty nose quite nicely and she is beginning to show signs of growth (which is contrary to her status previously). She is still not eating as much as she was when she first arrived, but since she has been off the antibiotics, her eating has increased a lot and she is growing.
She is still quarantined and will remain so. I am still hoping the vet misdiagnosed ... but I don't want to get my hopes up. Will know more after the bloodwork is complete.

Today's Featured Rescue is Oliver the Main Coon. Oliver is a Pure Bred Maine Coon; his pedigreed name is Dorwill Magickal Spell Oliver. Check out his coat ... isn't it neat looking?
Oliver is currently located in Palmerton, PA. http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/14805568

Foster Update
Well I have some bad news about our foster kitten. You see, now that we can pick her up, we are able to do a physical exam. The feral kitten (who is friendly enough that "Feral" doesn't really apply anymore) is a female. She is very friendly now and spends most of her time purring and nudging us.
When I did a cursory check of her, what I found concerned me. Her abdomen was swollen. I don't mean wormy-belly-swollen. I mean full out crazy big swollen. And hard too.
Although my first hope was worms, it doesn't look like that is the cause. (Fecal is ok, no vomiting wriggly parasites, etc.) We dewormed her anyway and there is another dewormer scheduled in a few days, but her abdomen has swollen larger, not smaller.
The swelling now includes nearly her entire abdominal section. She began having a runny nose last week (sneezing, cloudy-milky fluid, drippy, etc.) and we have her on antibiotics which started on Sunday. In addition to this, the kitten doesn't seem to have grown since arriving at our house (except her abdomen of course!). Her teeth look to be that of a 3 month old kitten (which doesn't make much sense because she's been at our house for a month, at the finder's house for a month, plus however long she was with mom-cat -- assume 7 to 9 weeks).
We took her to the clinic and after examination, the vet there says that there is a very strong chance (85%) that the kitten has Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP). FIP is fatal. Lucky for our resident cat, it is not airborne, it travels through body fluids.
Our vet gave us few options; mainly keep her comfortable until she is in pain/discomfort ... then euthanize. We are very sad. We had been considering keeping this one since we only have our one resident cat and black cats are so difficult to adopt out.
We are planning on keeping the kitten in our house (quarantined in a crate) until she begins to show signs of discomfort. We will go through with the dewormer in a few days and finish off our remaining 8 days worth of antibiotics. We will keep our fingers crossed that our vet is wrong. I don't think she is wrong (it would be a first!), but we can hope.

Featured Rescue - Peaches
Today's featured rescue is Peaches, the Dilute Calico. Isn't she precious? Peaches was born November 13, 2009 ... that was Friday the 13th! That's got to be some awesome karma.
Anyway, Peaches gets along well with the other cats in the house and dotes on the humans. She reportedly purrs as soon as you touch her. Sounds like a keeper to me.
Peaches is being cared for by volunteers of the Toronto Cat Rescue. Her Petfinder page is http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/15490614. If you are interested in adopting a one of a kind cat, Peaches sure seems like a one good choice!

Foster Updates ... Feral Kitten January 2010
As promised, I am posting some pics of the feral kitten we have. We took the kitten because the lady who was feeding it couldn't do so anymore. Kittens come around much more quickly than adult cats do. We have had the kitten since December 23, 2009.
The first three days were pretty bad ... the kitten would throw itself against the crate's walls towards us ... then there was the growling and the hissing ... After the first week, we were able to touch it without the hysterics. After 10 days, we were able to pat the kitten and it PURRS. Last week there was still the growling and hissing when we walked into view but when patted, the kitten would stop growling and after a few minutes would start to purr. We could pick it up, but the purring would stop.
Starting yesterday, the growling when I walk into view does not happen. The kitten actually seems happy to see us and will get up and walk along the crate wall until we open the door. I have not taken the kitten in yet for treatment at the clinic and I have not checked to see if it is male or female.
