Video - Cat Does Dog Tricks

Whoever said cats aren't trainable has simply never spent the time with their cat to teach it. Cats can learn many of the same tricks as dogs can, however they require more time, patience and treats than dogs! I've met a few clicker-trained cats and it always amazes me. I hate to admit it but the best I've been able to do with my cat is get him to come when he's called (75% of the time).

What a good kitty. I have never taken the time to train a cat. But it sure looks like it can be done

I'm glad to see your blog about Drowning in Cats. I've often visited and greatly enjoy Dogs Deserve Freedom.

With that, I want to take a moment out to wish you and all your readers Happy Holidays

It looked to me like he was getting a teeny bit annoyed at the end...

What fun! I am fully capable of training my horses (usually) but cat training is beyond me. I let my cats train me instead.

Cats are very smart and I think decide when, where, and how they want to be trained. Getting it on a video is the hardest part - great job!

What an amazing cat! And what a patient trainer/owner. Without knowing the background, I would guess that these two have a very close relationship. Cats don't normally do tricks like a dog. But they are not as untrainable as many think.
One of our cats, Sara (who has her own blog) wanted to play fetch when she was a kitten. So I threw little paper balls and she would fetch them and bring them to me. I am not talking about one or two times. I am talking about fifty times -- every single day! I just kept at it as long as she seemed to enjoy it. Never forced her; never punished her; just built upon something that she herself chose to show me.
There are cat breeds that are more "trainable" than others. My Sara is a mix of Norwegian Forest cat, Angora and normal Swedish farm-cat generally called "Europé". Nothing special. Her father was a real charmer, but she is still not of a breed that is known to be good at doing tricks. She is better at climbing and hunting and hiding.
The well-known cat, Daisy the Curly Cat, is a Devon Rex which are known to be more "people-friendly" than other kinds of cats. Daisy probably also has a very patient and knowledgable owner. So there here is the ideal combination: good breeding and loving, patient training!
I really like this video. Thank you for showing it.

Best wishes
Anna
